The Pressure Test

What Is happening operationally?

A project can appear on track while the people delivering it absorb unsustainable pressure. The Pressure Test is a focused diagnostic for live projects, leadership groups or teams where pressure may be affecting workforce health, decision making or delivery. It can also be used proactively to test whether current ways of working are sustainable.

Understand the causes of pressure.

The HSE Management Standards provide recognised themes for exploring work-related stress through Demands, Control, Support, Relationships, Role and Change. The Pressure Test draws on these areas and translates them into construction delivery.

We examine the demands being placed on people and the level of influence they have over their work. We consider how communication, behaviour and support change when delivery becomes difficult. Clarity around roles and dependencies is tested, particularly where projects have become reliant on specific individuals. We also look at the effects of programme change, working patterns and recovery.

Together, this creates a clearer picture of where pressure is being generated and where stronger control may be needed.

What pressure is doing.

The objective is not simply to establish whether people feel stressed. We look at how operational pressure is affecting the way people work and the way the project performs.

This may show up in poorer judgement, increased fatigue or difficulties within the team. It may also contribute to error and rework, absence or problems retaining people. The focus is on understanding what conditions are creating pressure, what effect they are having and where stronger controls could make delivery more sustainable.

Decision quality

Identify where pressure may be affecting judgement and increasing operational risk.

Fatigue and recovery

See where sustained demands are reducing recovery and increasing fatigue.

Team performance

Understand effects on collaboration, error, rework, absence and retention.

Delivery sustainability

Assess whether current ways of working can be maintained safely.

Understand the causes of pressure.

The Pressure Test looks at the conditions around the work, rather than judging who is coping and who is not. It creates a constructive conversation that can surface existing concerns and support continual improvement.

It is also important to be clear about its scope. The Pressure Test is a focused snapshot, not a substitute for a full psychosocial risk assessment where one is required. It identifies themes, challenges assumptions and highlights where further attention may be needed. Findings can inform further assessment, an ISO 45003 Gap Analysis or action through existing management processes.

When It Helps

When to use a pressure test

A Pressure Test can be useful when there are signs that delivery pressure is becoming harder to absorb, or when leaders want an early check on working arrangements before concerns become more serious.

Continued overtime

Delivery depends on regular overtime or sustained extra effort to meet programme demands.

Known hotspot

A project or team has been identified as an area of concern.

Pressure signals

Fatigue, conflict or disengagement are becoming more visible within the team.

Proactive check

Leaders want to test whether current working arrangements remain sustainable

Do not rely on silent heroics to meet your next milestone.
